Chapter 11B, Division 5 (General Site and Building Elements) @ 2021 CBC Intervening Code Cycle

2019 CBC Revisions:
2021 Intervening Code Cycle

Chapter 11B, Division 5 (General Site and Building Elements)

Shared Access Aisles

11B-502.3 Access aisle. Access aisles serving parking spaces shall comply with Section 11B-502.3. Access aisles shall adjoin an accessible route. Two parking spaces or one parking space and one electric vehicle charging space shall be permitted to share a common access aisle.

While this may seem obvious in retrospect, the specific requirement for blue color outline striping at accessible parking access aisles conflicted with the prohibition of blue color outline striping at accessible electric vehicle charging station access aisles. Together with a new provision in Division 8, it is now clarified that these accessible vehicle spaces can share a common access aisle that is striped as required for accessible parking.

Detectable Warnings in “Clear” Areas

Following years of ambiguity and misinterpretation, these and similar provisions relating to “clear” spaces—such as clear floor spaces, maneuvering clearances, and so forth—are now expressly defined as prohibiting detectable warnings. As part of this revision, the former exception for 1:48 maximum slopes is relocated to the technical requirement itself.

Access aisles shall be at the same level as the vehicle pull-up space they serve. Changes in level, slopes exceeding 1:48, and detectable warnings are shall not be permitted.
